Whole day depends on check-in timing
Contingency plan
Plan: email Sand Hotel on 9/28 requesting early check-in (see Pre-Trip To-Do box), then call the front desk once you've landed to confirm actual timing. If check-in is late (3pm): do everything below to stay busy. If check-in comes early (e.g. noon): cut down to just breakfast + the church walk, then go check in and rest instead of forcing the rest of the list. Priority order if cutting: 1) Breakfast (non-negotiable, everyone eats) 2) Church walk (low effort, right there) 3) Grótta (first to cut — adds real drive time) 4) Wine/cheese errand (second to cut — can shift to another day since Vínbúðin exists elsewhere too).
6:15 AM
Land at KEF
Confirmed
Passport control + bags ≈30 min. Iceland is Schengen — manual passport line, not e-gates, if arriving direct from the US.
≈7:00 AM
Pick up rental car — Blue Car Rental
Confirmed
Booking#UDC8C6 · Kia Cee'd Sportswagon, automatic
Not a driving direction, a walking one: from arrivals, walk toward the Departures Hall side, then cross the P1 parking lot (~3–4 min) to Blikavöllur 3. Bring booking confirmation, driver's license, credit card in Mike's name. Do online check-in before you fly to speed this up.
4
≈8:00 AM
Breakfast — Sandholt
Plan
Opens 7:30 AM. Right at the hotel (Laugavegur 36, two doors from Sand Hotel at 34) — lamb sandwiches, pastries, good coffee. Grab a couple extra pastries/bakery items to go — easy casual lunch for today or another day.
3
≈8:45 AM
Walk: Skólavörðustígur → Hallgrímskirkja
Plan
Rainbow Street up to the church, ~4-5 min each way from the hotel. Easy, flat, good for a jet-lagged morning. Optional elevator up the tower for a city view. Loop back to the car afterward.
4
≈9:30 AM
Drive to Grótta Lighthouse
Plan — tide dependent
~10–15 min drive. Causeway only walkable at low tide. Sept 29 low tide ≈1:53 PM — causeway should be crossable roughly 10:30 AM–4:30 PM, so a ~9:30 AM departure lines up well. Check conditions on arrival; wind can affect water levels beyond the standard prediction. Free parking on site.
5
≈11:00 AM
Vínbúðin (wine) + Bónus or Krónan (cheese, crackers)
Plan — errand run
Drive back toward downtown. Vínbúðin (state liquor monopoly — the only place wine is sold) opens around 11am weekdays. Grab an unoaked chardonnay for evening cocktail hours at the hotels. Pair with a stop at Krónan, Hallveigarstígur for cheese, crackers, and snacks — regular supermarkets only sell low-alcohol beer, not wine, so both stops are needed. Do this before parking for the day, not after.
15:00 (asking earlier)
Park for the day & check in — Sand Hotel
Confirmed
Conf#6YPG4LKP6 · Deluxe Room · 2 nights
No hotel parking — nearest paid lot is ~25m away, €25/day, staffed 9 AM–6 PM (confirm with hotel whether overnight/in-out access works, since you'll want the car early on 10/1). Park here once errands are done, not before. Standard check-in 3 PM; front desk is 24/7 and will hold bags earlier. Following up directly to ask about a paid early check-in (~$50) around 10 AM.
4
Evening
Dinner — Íslenski Barinn (The Icelandic Bar)
Leaning toward this — no reservation
~7-10 min walk from Sand Hotel, on Ingólfsstræti just off Laugavegur. Casual, lively pub serving real Icelandic dishes — no reservations, rarely more than a 10 min wait.
Ideas & things to add
Backups if Íslenski Barinn has too long a wait: Sægreifinn (Sea Baron, harbor, ~15-20 min walk) or The Laundromat Cafe (central, low-key).
